On Friday 23 July, the Metropolitan Police’s Roads and Transport Policing Command launched a significant operation across London streets aimed at tackling dangerous drivers and violent offenders. The initiative, known as Operation Spartan, focused on apprehending criminals and reckless drivers breaking the law.
The extensive day-long operation resulted in 25 arrests for serious offences including possession with intent to supply drugs, carrying offensive weapons, and driving while disqualified. Officers also issued 239 traffic offence reports, which could lead to fines and penalty points on driving licences. In addition, 41 vehicles were seized, targeting uninsured drivers and those driving without a valid licence.
Detective Inspector Dave Monk emphasised the importance of the operation, stating, “Tackling violent offenders is a priority for the Met. We used every tactic under the Op Spartan banner to catch criminals on the roads.”
Police established three strategic stop sites in Greenwich, Waltham Forest, and Wandsworth, focusing on vehicles linked to violent crime. The operation made extensive use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, allowing officers to respond promptly to real-time intelligence.
The crackdown is ongoing, with officials committed to continuing efforts to apprehend criminals exploiting London’s roads. DI Monk added, “We’ll do everything possible to bring them to justice.”
