Major flooding struck Eltham early on January 6 after a large water main burst on Eltham Road, leading to widespread disruption and chaos across the area.
Ten fire engines and approximately 70 firefighters from Lewisham, Eltham, East Greenwich, and nearby stations responded rapidly to the emergency. They are currently tackling floodwaters covering an estimated area of 600 metres by 200 metres.
Three basement flats have been flooded with water reaching around 20 centimetres deep. Even the Lee Green Fire Station was affected, submerged under six feet of water. Several roads have been closed, and parts of Eltham Road remain underwater, with floodwater spilling near local shops and restaurants.
Thames Water has issued an apology to residents experiencing low or no water pressure. Engineers are on site working to stop the leak and restore water supplies.
“We’re really sorry if you have low pressure or no water following a large burst pipe early this morning on the A20 Eltham Road, in SE12,” Thames Water said. “We’re on site and working to shut off flow from the burst. After that, supplies should begin to return to the affected area. We’d also like to apologise to drivers who have been inconvenienced by the A20 closure.”
The Metropolitan Police have cordoned off affected roads, with closures extending from A2212 Burnt Ash Road in Lee Green to Weigall Road. Transport for London has declared the incident major and urged the public to avoid the area.
The London Fire Brigade also warned people to stay clear while crews continue to divert floodwaters and contain the damage caused by the burst main.
