A man in his 40s has died after a police chase ended in a tragic crash on the M6 near Stoke-on-Trent at around 5am.
The victim was sitting in a stationary traffic management vehicle between junctions 14 and 15 northbound when it was struck by an Audi.
Staffordshire Police confirmed that officers were attempting to stop the stolen Audi before the collision occurred.
A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is currently in custody.
Police believe the Audi was involved in an earlier incident somewhere in the West Midlands.
National Highways reported that the motorway has been closed for several hours following the crash, resulting in delays of at least 60 minutes in the area.
“The victim was the only person in the traffic management vehicle,” detectives stated.
Due to police involvement prior to the collision, the case has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct for further investigation.
