Police responded to a violent knife fight outside the Jamiah Masjid & Institute, located at the junction of Durbar Avenue and Queen Mary’s Road in Coventry, just after 9pm on 1 October. The clash involved a large group of men, some reportedly armed with knives.
Officers found two injured men at the scene. A 52-year-old man had been stabbed and tragically died despite emergency medical efforts. A second man, aged 44, sustained a minor stab wound and received treatment.
In connection with the incident, armed police arrested a 56-year-old man nearby shortly after the attack. A second suspect, aged 27, was detained in the early hours of the following morning. Both men are currently held on suspicion of murder.
Detective Superintendent Shaun Edwards said, “We’re supporting the family of the man who has died at what is a truly awful time for them, and our thoughts go out to them. We’ve made some really good early progress in this investigation, but a lot of work remains to identify everyone involved. This appears to be an isolated dispute, not linked to other incidents in Coventry or the wider West Midlands.”
Police are urging anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward, especially if they have mobile phone or dashcam footage of the incident. Increased officer patrols will be conducted to reassure the local community.
