Thousands of vehicles are currently stuck on the M25 clockwise between junction 6 near Clackett Lane services and junction 5 at the A21/M26 interchange in Kent tonight following a pedestrian injury.
An overbridge on 1 Road in Westerham has also been closed as police conduct an investigation into the incident.
Kent Police, paramedics, and the Kent, Sussex, and Surrey Air Ambulance teams rushed to the scene located on the hard shoulder of the five-lane motorway. All lanes were briefly closed to allow the air ambulance to land safely.
The injured pedestrian received treatment at the scene before being airlifted to a hospital in London for further care.
National Highways confirmed that emergency services, including Kent Police and Traffic Officers, are managing the scene. Due to ongoing roadworks on the A25 strategic diversion route, traffic is being diverted through local roads instead.
Current congestion stretches approximately 4.5 miles, with drivers facing delays of around 30 minutes above normal travel times. The anti-clockwise carriageway between junctions 6 and 5 remains closed, and delays are also affecting the clockwise carriageway.
A Kent Police spokesperson said: “Officers were called at 7:40pm on Thursday 9 December 2021 after a pedestrian fell and suffered serious injuries on the M25. No vehicles were involved. Officers and ambulance crews remain at the scene.”
Motorists are urged to avoid the area and expect lengthy delays. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
