Thousands of drivers are currently trapped in heavy traffic on the M25 clockwise carriageway between junction 6 near Clacket Lane services and junction 5 at the A21/M26 interchange in Kent following a serious pedestrian injury.
A pedestrian suffered serious injuries after falling on the busy motorway. Kent Police, paramedics, and the Kent, Sussex & Surrey Air Ambulance quickly responded to the incident on the hard shoulder of the five-lane carriageway. All lanes were temporarily closed to allow the air ambulance to land safely.
The injured individual received treatment at the scene before being airlifted to a hospital in London for further care.
In addition to the motorway closures, an overbridge on 1 Road in Westerham has also been closed while officers carry out investigations. Scene of crime officers have been observed taking photographs, with a yellow high-visibility jacket seen on the carriageway.
National Highways confirmed that emergency services, including traffic officers, are actively managing the situation. Due to planned roadworks on the A25 diversion route, traffic is being redirected through local roads, which is causing additional delays.
Currently, there is approximately 4.5 miles of congestion with delays exceeding 30 minutes compared to normal travel times.
A Kent Police spokesman said: “Officers were called at 7.40pm on Thursday 9 December 2021, to a location on the M25 where a pedestrian has fallen and suffered serious injuries. No vehicles were involved.”
“The anti-clockwise carriageway is currently closed between junctions 6 and 5. There are also delays on the clockwise carriageway. Officers and ambulance crews remain at the scene. The closure is likely to remain in place for a number of hours.”
