Former Labour heavyweight Lord Peter Mandelson was arrested on Monday night over allegations that he passed sensitive government secrets to the notorious paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.
The 72-year-old ex-business secretary was spotted arriving back at his London home around 2am on February 24, just hours after being taken into custody.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed: “He was arrested at an address in Camden on Monday, February 23, and taken to a London police station for interview. This follows search warrants executed at two addresses in Wiltshire and Camden.”
Lord Mandelson was later released on bail pending further investigation. Police have remained tight-lipped to avoid jeopardising the ongoing inquiry.
The scandal erupted after leaked US Department of Justice documents linked Mandelson directly to Jeffrey Epstein last month. Emails dating back to 2009 allegedly show Mandelson sharing confidential information from Gordon Brown’s adviser about government plans, including a secret “asset sales plan.”
He reportedly discussed taxing bankers’ bonuses and confirmed a eurozone bailout the day before it was made public in 2010. Importantly, these communications took place after Epstein’s 2008 conviction as a sex offender, raising serious concerns about Mandelson’s relationship with the disgraced financier.
Lord Mandelson’s arrest comes shortly after the detention of former Duke of York Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who was also questioned over misconduct in public office. This charge carries a potential life sentence and involves abuse of official power, highlighting the expanding political fallout linked to the Epstein scandal.
