Between Monday, June 3, and Saturday, June 8, 2024, four high-end cars were stolen in the Kennington, Kingsnorth, and Ashford areas of Kent. The vehicles targeted were exclusively Mercedes and BMW models.
Police suspect that all the thefts involved sophisticated keyless entry hacks, commonly known as ‘relay thefts.’ This method involves thieves amplifying the key signal to unlock and drive away the vehicles without leaving a trace.
Kent Crime Squad detectives are actively investigating these incidents and are calling on the public for assistance. Anyone with information is urged to contact Kent Police on 01843 222289, quoting reference 46/92840/24. Alternatively, anonymous tips can be provided to Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555111 or using their online form.
To help prevent keyless car thefts, Kent Police recommend several precautions:
- Keep your keys away from your car by storing them in a safe place at home, far from vehicle doors and windows.
- Use a Faraday Bag, a signal-blocking pouch that stops relay signals effectively. Remember to check the bag’s effectiveness regularly.
- If you have purchased a second-hand vehicle, reprogramme your keys to avoid potential security risks.
- Switch off wireless signals on your key fob when it is idle to reduce vulnerability to relay attacks.
