Kent Police are on high alert this weekend, increasing patrols in public spaces and on beaches across the county. Their aim is to remind the public about social distancing, crack down on illegal mass gatherings, and address any crime or disorder linked to these events.
Despite weather forecasts predicting wet conditions, officers will maintain a strong presence to ensure that those visiting Kent’s beaches and parks behave responsibly. With Covid-19 still posing a serious threat, maintaining safe distances remains essential for everyone.
The police continue to investigate a disturbance that occurred on Greatstone beach on Sunday 9 August. During the incident, four officers sustained minor injuries. A 29-year-old man has been charged with dangerous driving and actual bodily harm. Detectives are also seeking individuals who threw bottles at officers during the fracas.
In addition, Kent Police intervened to prevent another planned seafront event rumoured for 12 August. Officers located the organisers and travelled to London to warn them about the health risks and legal consequences. Despite these warnings, the group moved on to Essex, where two men were arrested on charges of conspiracy to commit a public nuisance.
Assistant Chief Constable Nikki Faulconbridge stated: “As we continue to investigate Greatstone, those planning mass gatherings should think again. These events cause real harm to communities and risk spreading Covid-19. We’ll work with councils and police forces to minimise impact. Any illegal gatherings will be dealt with robustly.”
She added, “Most people follow Government advice, but we’ll engage with anyone who doesn’t, explain the rules, and urge compliance.”
