Itchen Bridge was shut down tonight after a woman threatened to jump off the structure. Police sealed the bridge in both directions just before 9pm following reports of the high-risk incident.

The woman was spotted over the parapet, prompting immediate action from authorities. Officers rushed to the scene and engaged in talks to convince her to step back from the edge.

Emergency teams quickly converged on the scene including two lifeboats on standby, a Coastguard rescue team from Hillhead deployed, and an ambulance parked mid-bridge awaiting the outcome.

A police spokeswoman confirmed: “We are dealing with an incident on the Itchen Bridge and have sent a number of specialist officers to the scene.”

At around 10.20pm, emergency services successfully convinced the woman to come down safely. She is now receiving care from South Central Ambulance Service.
