Tragedy struck on the Isle of Wight when prison officer Nick Medlin, stationed at HMP Isle of Wight’s Parkhurst Site, was brutally attacked while celebrating with family in Ventnor late on Christmas Eve. Despite medical efforts, Nick never regained consciousness.
Nick, aged 55, had recently relocated to the Isle of Wight with his partner Dani, leaving their sons Joe and Charlie on the mainland for their studies. Having joined the Prison Service only a few years ago, Nick quickly earned the respect and affection of both colleagues and prisoners through his professionalism and warmth.
“Nick was one of the best officers I’ve ever worked with in over 30 years,” said a close colleague. “He had a natural way with people and never had to demand respect – it was simply given.”
Before his career in the prison service, Nick ran his own company, bringing valuable people skills to his role as an officer. He was known for his permanent smile, quick wit, and the cups of tea and coffee he generously shared with teammates.
Nick’s mentor recalled, “He knew how to handle any situation, even if he sometimes found himself in the wrong place during incidents – something we never let him forget in good humour.”
This heartbreaking loss has left a significant void among prison staff and family members. “Nick was genuinely one of the loveliest people and friends I’ve had the pleasure to work alongside,” said a close friend.
