Tragic Blaze in Brighton: Man Dies, Woman Arrested
A deadly fire ripped through a Preston Road flat in Brighton at 3:48am today, sparking a major emergency response and road closures across the area.
Firefighters Battle Fierce Flames
Crews from Preston Circus, Roedean, Newhaven, Bexhill, Lewes, and West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service tackled the blaze in the basement of a three-storey building.
Tragically, a 50-year-old man was found dead at the scene despite heroic rescue efforts.
Woman Held On Suspicion of Murder
Sussex Police have arrested a 36-year-old Brighton woman on suspicion of murder linked to the fire.
“Emergency services are currently dealing with a fire inside a property in Preston Road, Brighton. A road closure is in place from Ditchling Rise to Stanford Avenue. Please seek alternative routes while services are in the area,” a police spokesperson said.
Investigation and Public Appeal
The cause of the fire remains unclear. Sussex Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward, quoting Operation Tunnel. Reports can be made online or by calling 101.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue added: “We used breathing apparatus, an electric saw, and forcible entry to access the property. Despite the efforts, one fatality was reported, and a female was taken into ambulance care.”
A full fire investigation is underway to uncover what sparked the deadly blaze.
