A trader who promised repairs at a Palmbeach Avenue home in Hythe has allegedly taken cash and disappeared, leaving the property unsafe. The homeowner claims the work was never completed, and when concerns were raised, the trader admitted he could not fix the issue.
On 20 July, residents in Sellindge reported two men selling cleaning services door-to-door who refused to leave when declined. Shortly afterwards, a Hythe resident on Hillside Street paid for equipment installation that never took place. Contact with the supposed installer revealed the company had not received any payment, and the man has not returned the money or responded to communications.
Inspector James Wyles from Folkestone’s Community Safety Unit issued a warning: “While officers investigate these cases, I urge residents to be careful about who they let into their homes. Always ask for ID. If you’re unsure about a caller, ask them to leave and come back when you’ve got someone with you. Look out for your neighbours and report anything suspicious straight away by calling 101 or dial 999 if a crime is in progress.”
Fraudsters often offer unnecessary or poor-quality services such as driveway cleaning, gardening, or gutter repairs. They may demand cash upfront and then disappear without completing the job. Residents are advised to refuse unsolicited repair or maintenance offers at their door. If pressured, tell the trader to leave. If they do not, call the police immediately on 999.
Never accompany a trader to the bank or cash point, as legitimate workers will not ask for this. Use reputable traders who have Kent County Council Trading Standards approval, often in partnership with Checkatrade. Always get quotes in writing and verify the company the trader claims to represent.
