Emergency services were dispatched to Bullockstone Road in Herne Bay at 4:36pm today after a vehicle struck a gas pipeline, resulting in a significant gas leak. Two fire engines from Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) arrived on scene alongside Kent Police, a gas safety engineer, and the South East Coast Ambulance Service Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) to manage the incident.
As a precaution, one home and a nearby caravan site were evacuated to ensure residents’ safety while crews worked to contain the leak. Local residents reported a strong smell of gas in the area, but officials have confirmed the situation is currently under control.
A Kent Fire and Rescue spokesperson said, “Crews are currently on the scene of a gas leak caused by a vehicle collision. We are working with partner agencies to ensure the area is made safe. If you are in the local vicinity and smell gas, please stay indoors and keep windows closed until further notice.”
The driver involved in the collision was assessed by paramedics from SECAmb and was found to have no serious injuries.
Authorities have advised motorists to avoid Bullockstone Road while emergency teams continue their work to secure the area and protect residents. Updates will be provided as the situation develops.
