Kent Police have issued a warning to residents following a distraction theft at a McDonald’s restaurant in Folkestone.
On Monday, November 18, 2024, between 3pm and 3:30pm, a woman dining at the McDonald’s on West Terrace had her iPhone stolen. A teenage boy, approximately 17 years old and of mixed race, approached the victim and her friend to engage them in conversation. During the interaction, he allegedly placed a piece of paper over the woman’s phone on the table. As he walked away, he took both the paper and the phone hidden underneath.
The suspect is described as having short dark brown or black hair and wearing black clothing.
Detective Inspector Carlo Capozzi urged the public to remain cautious, stating: “While my officers investigate, I urge everyone to be vigilant with their belongings when out in public and when strangers approach you. Don’t hesitate to check your valuables before engaging with anyone. Never leave valuables unattended, even for a moment.”
He added, “Keep phones out of sight, in zipped pockets or bags. Enabling phone tracking apps can help recover lost or stolen devices.”
