Police in Dagenham are backing the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as it investigates a fatal shooting by officers that took place last night.
Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist expressed his condolences, stating, “Our thoughts are with the family of the man who died, the local community in Dagenham, and the officers involved in this serious incident.” He emphasised that the IOPC is leading an independent inquiry into the matter.
“It’s right that officers are held to account when shots are fired. We will co-operate fully and provide all the information needed for their investigation,” added Assistant Commissioner Twist.
The incident occurred just before 9pm on Thursday, 23 November, when officers were called to Weston Road following reports of a man who had come out of a property twice, causing alarm. A Metropolitan Police officer then fired two shots shortly before 9pm.
Despite first aid being administered at the scene, the man was pronounced dead around 9.30pm.
Police recovered what appears to be a non-police issue firearm near the man, as well as another weapon inside the property. Both firearms have been sent for ballistic testing as part of the ongoing investigation.
IOPC director Amanda Rowe commented, “Our thoughts are with the man’s family and everyone affected by this tragic event. We have reached out to the family to offer sympathies and explain our role.”
“Given a man has died after being shot by police, our role is to investigate all circumstances around this incident, including the police’s actions and decisions,” she added.
Rowe also noted, “We know many questions will be asked, but it’s vital we establish the facts before commenting further.”
The investigation remains in its early stages. IOPC investigators have reviewed bodycam footage and police call logs. They continue to be present at the scene, speaking to neighbours and seeking witnesses to gather more information.
