Emergency services were called to Portsmouth Harbour late on Friday night following two separate water rescue incidents near Port Solent. Firefighters from Cosham, Fareham, and the Water Rescue Support Unit collaborated with a Hart Team from South Central Ambulance and two Coastguard Search and Rescue crews to manage the emergencies.
The first incident occurred shortly after 10:20pm when a man became trapped in thick mud at Paulsgrove Lake, close to Southampton Road’s luxury marina and housing estate. Rescue teams acted swiftly to free him. He was successfully pulled from the mud and transferred ashore by lifeboat, after which South Central Ambulance Service took over his care.
Almost immediately after, emergency crews were dispatched to Portchester following reports of a despondent man in the water. Working in coordination with Hampshire Constabulary and a second Portsmouth rescue team, responders safely removed the man from the water.
A UK Coastguard spokesperson confirmed that the incidents were police-led operations. The Coastguard was called in to provide support, deploying Gosport and Fareham Inshore Rescue Lifeboats along with a Coastguard Rescue Team. The spokesperson declined to provide further details about the rescues.
