Five crooks have been caught and charged after stealing a campervan in South Yorkshire. Thanks to the efforts of two police dogs, a stinger tyre spike, and expert teamwork, the suspects were quickly apprehended.
At 10:42pm on Sunday, South Yorkshire Police received a 999 call reporting a stolen campervan in Sheffield’s Arbourthorne area. Within 20 minutes, a dog handler spotted the vehicle speeding down the A57 towards Ladybower.
Anticipating that the thieves might take dangerous risks, officers collaborated with Derbyshire Constabulary. A stinger strip near Glossop was deployed, shredding the campervan’s tyres and bringing the high-speed chase to an end.
Two men abandoned the campervan and attempted to flee on foot, but police dogs quickly tracked and cornered them. A search of the vehicle uncovered stolen goods, and tests revealed that the driver was under the influence of cocaine.
The five suspects – four men aged 25, 35, 49, and 55, and a 23-year-old woman – had travelled from Rochdale to South Yorkshire to commit the thefts. They were arrested on multiple charges including theft of a motor vehicle, theft from a vehicle, driving without insurance, driving over the prescribed drug limit, and going equipped for theft.
All five have been released on police bail while investigations continue. The coordinated efforts of two police forces, two police dogs, and the use of a stinger strip successfully stopped these criminals in their tracks.
