A bomb scare has caused the shutdown of Horton Road in Brighton following the discovery of explosive materials in a property. Sussex Police launched a major operation just after 11.30am on Friday, resulting in an immediate lockdown of the street.
Experts from the Royal Navy’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit based in Portsmouth were called in to make the scene safe. Wearing full bomb suits and helmets, the bomb squad used a remote-controlled robot to handle the dangerous devices found at the location.
Paramedics and the High-Intensity Response Team (HART) from South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECA) also attended the scene. Several residents were evacuated as a precautionary measure while the operation was ongoing.
A Sussex Police spokesperson confirmed that a 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possessing an explosive substance for an unlawful purpose. The incident began at 11.30am after officers were alerted by reports of a strong petrol smell coming from the flat.
