A major fire erupted above the Britannia Chip Shop at The Hard in Portsmouth this evening. The blaze started just after 7.45pm, quickly spreading and engulfing the building in thick smoke and flames.

Emergency services arrived on the scene before 8pm, responding to the intense fire. Seven fire engines from Southsea, Cosham, Havant, Fareham, and nearby areas were deployed to tackle the blaze.

Approximately 40 firefighters are actively battling the inferno, using an aerial ladder to combat the fire on the roof above the chip shop. Their efforts are focused on containing the flames and preventing further damage.

During the rescue operation, Hampshire’s rescue team saved one person from the fire. The individual is currently receiving treatment from paramedics from South Central Ambulance. In addition to three paramedics, several police units are present at the scene.

All roads surrounding The Hard have been closed to ensure public safety. Police have urged residents and visitors to avoid the area while emergency services continue their work.

Locals and patrons from nearby pubs, including The Ship Anson and The Invincible, gathered at a safe distance to observe the situation. They have since been moved away from the scene as firefighters persist in their urgent efforts to control the blaze.

Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
