Chaos erupted on the A21 near Johns Cross after a serious crash involving two vehicles forced the closure of the key Sussex road in both directions. Three people in one car were seriously injured and rushed to hospital following the collision.
The other driver, a 16-year-old boy, was arrested by police on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop, and aggravated vehicle taking. Authorities confirmed that the teenager was being pursued by police moments before the crash occurred.
An Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) spokesperson said, “We have started an independent investigation into this serious road traffic collision. The incident happened at 2.25pm on 16 March. The teenage driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries before being put into police custody. The other three occupants suffered serious injuries and remain in hospital.”
Both carriageways of the A21 remain closed, causing significant delays as commuters seek alternative routes. Local authorities have urged motorists to avoid the area while emergency services continue to clear the scene and carry out their investigation.
