Chaos erupted in Fratton tonight after a high-speed police chase through Portsmouth streets ended with a silver Volkswagen Golf crashing into metal railings on Lake Road.

Witnesses described the scene as reminiscent of a moment from the Fast and Furious films. The incident occurred when the Volkswagen, pursued by police at around 60mph, sped through the busy junction of Fratton Road and Lake Road. The driver lost control while taking the corner too fast and ploughed through the railings.

The car came to rest facing oncoming traffic with airbags deployed. Two passengers remained inside the wrecked vehicle when officers arrived. Both were arrested and required medical treatment. One passenger, reportedly with facial injuries, was rushed to Queen Alexandra Hospital.

The driver attempted to flee the scene but was quickly apprehended and is currently being questioned by police.

Local resident Katie Jennison-White described the chaos outside her home, saying, “I was sat in my living room when we heard a crash, shortly followed by police sirens. This was caused by a police chase. After all the damage, a man in a grey hoodie and light shorts ran away.”

Another eyewitness reported that the Volkswagen “was being chased by the police, took the junction too quickly and careered over the road. They smashed through the metal railings and their airbag was deployed.” A separate witness noted the car was speeding down Lake Road “at over 50mph being chased by a police car.”

All three occupants, described as white males in their early 30s, are now in police custody. One of the men reportedly has a known criminal history in Portsmouth.

Police have sealed off Lake Road and are advising motorists to avoid the area while investigations and clean-up operations are underway. Paramedics from South Central Ambulance Services attended the scene to treat two individuals.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available about this high-speed chase that disrupted a quiet evening in Fratton.
