Grandad, 87, Misses Wedding but Gets Dream Day at Care Home
Care Home Transformed into Wedding Venue
When 87-year-old Leventhal, a resident at Jewish Care’s Vi & John Rubens House, couldn’t make it to his grandson’s big day in Cheshire, the staff stepped up. Social care coordinator Jacklin Stephenson and the team quickly transformed part of the home in Gants Hill into a stunning wedding venue. They decked it out with a chuppah, balloons, flowers, and refreshments to recreate the real deal.
Mock Wedding Brings Joy to Residents
Staff and residents dressed to the nines for the special occasion. A full mock ceremony was held so Leventhal could share in the wedding joy, even via Zoom. Jacklin said, “For me, it was fantastic that he was able to join the wedding via Zoom. But to recreate the wedding here was fabulous. For many of our residents who haven’t been to a wedding recently, it was such a joy.”
Emotional Family Moments
The bride, Jemma, called the gesture “such a lovely idea” and said it “meant so much” to celebrate with her grandfather. Her parents, Amanda and Paul Becker, travelled to join the event. Leventhal himself was visibly touched, saying, “It was excellent, I found it very moving. The staff were very kind. There was a first-class atmosphere. Family means a lot, and I’m pleased to be in a home where the staff care so much.”
The day ended with guests enjoying afternoon tea in the sunshine, surrounded by family, friends, and fellow residents—a wedding day to remember for all.
