Brutal Attack on Local Man Ends in Murder Conviction
Jerry Appicella, 51, was viciously attacked by a gang of youths armed with a brick and metal bar on 3 December as he headed home from his local shop. His body was found 12 days later at his Craganour Place residence, after his family reported him missing.
Four Young Men Face Justice in Sheffield Crown Court
On 25 March, Shae Nicholson, 20, Martell Fabian Brown, 24, Kian Gerrard, 20, and a 15-year-old youth appeared before Sheffield Crown Court. After a four-week trial, Nicholson was convicted of murder. Brown and the 15-year-old were found guilty of manslaughter, while Gerrard was cleared of all charges.
The court heard the chilling motive was simply that the attackers “wanted to” harm Jerry. Factors like his sexuality, appearance, and alcohol dependency might have fueled their brutality.
Terrifying Ambush Captured on CCTV
Detective Chief Inspector Simon Palmer revealed the gang had been loitering around the Go Local store in Denaby Main, causing a hostile atmosphere for shoppers. Jerry, a solitary yet familiar community figure who visited daily, was taunted inside the shop. The attackers then lay in wait outside.
CCTV footage caught Nicholson crouched and ready to ambush Jerry as he walked home via a nearby alley. Nicholson struck with a brick, while the 15-year-old struck with a metal pole. A brave woman who had offered to walk Jerry home witnessed the attack’s final moments and rushed to help him as the gang fled.
Jerry locked himself inside his home but died hours later from severe head trauma caused by the assault.
Key Evidence Led to Arrests and Charges
Jerry’s family contacted police when he failed to respond. Officers forced entry to his home on 15 December and began a murder investigation.
“CCTV footage was crucial,” said DCI Palmer. “It provided a clear timeline and even showed Nicholson bragging about the attack using homophobic slurs.” All suspects were arrested between 18 and 24 December and charged.
The two men and the 15-year-old will be sentenced in May 2021.
