Wakefield was shaken on Friday night (14 March) after a major violent disturbance erupted on Kirkgate, prompting a swift police response. Two men have now been charged in connection with the incident that triggered temporary stop-and-search powers across the city.
Mirko Bakir, 32, of Wakefield, and Harda Azeez, 31, from Royston, Barnsley, face serious charges related to the brawl. Both men are charged with Section 18 wounding with intent. Additionally, Azeez is accused of carrying an offensive weapon in a public place. The pair appeared at Leeds Magistrates’ Court on Monday (17 March) and remain in custody.
Two other men, aged 21 and 23, who were arrested during the police inquiry, have been released on police bail as investigations continue.
The violent disorder began just after 7pm and involved approximately 30 people reportedly armed with weapons. One victim sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.
In response to the incident, Wakefield police invoked Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994. This provision allowed officers to conduct stop-and-searches on any person or vehicle without the need for reasonable suspicion. The stop-and-search order was implemented at 11pm on Friday and remained in effect for 24 hours.
The operation covered key locations including Kirkgate Train Station, Wakefield College, Pinderfields Hospital, and the Eastmoor estate. The police have since stood down the operation.
Following the disturbance, police have increased patrols throughout Wakefield city centre to reassure the public and prevent further violence. A spokesperson for Wakefield District CID said, “This was a serious incident that caused concern across the community. We are grateful to those who have come forward with information so far and encourage anyone who witnessed the incident or captured footage to speak with us.”
