Khyron Smart-Mullin, aged 20, from Trowbridge, has been sentenced to 22 months in prison after admitting charges of assaulting a police officer and dangerous driving. The sentence was handed down at Swindon Crown Court on July 22.
The incident took place on June 1 near Devizes when a Wiltshire Police officer approached a white Dacia Jogger parked in a field off Conscience Lane, Rowde. Suddenly, Smart-Mullin accelerated towards the officer, striking him and causing injuries that required hospital treatment.
The injured officer has since returned to restricted duties following the assault, which required immediate medical attention.
After the attack, Smart-Mullin fled the scene at high speed, prompting a large police pursuit. He was subsequently arrested and charged with actual bodily harm, dangerous driving, driving without a licence, and driving without insurance.
Assistant Chief Constable Mark Cooper condemned the reckless attack, stating, “This case is just another stark reminder of the dangers officers face whilst on duty, day in, day out.” He also praised the police officers for their swift action in bringing Smart-Mullin to justice and criticised the defendant’s disregard for the safety of police and the public.
In addition to his prison sentence, Smart-Mullin has been banned from driving for nearly four years following his release and must pass a driving retest before being allowed to drive again.
