Three British nationals are facing charges after a petrol bomb was thrown at the London headquarters of Iran International, a broadcaster known for its critical coverage of Tehran’s regime. The attack triggered a high-speed police pursuit across northwest London before the suspects were apprehended.
The incident occurred shortly after 8.30pm on Wednesday when a lit container was hurled into the broadcaster’s premises. The container landed in a car park, where the flames quickly extinguished without causing injuries or significant damage.
Police officers on patrol noticed a black SUV speeding away moments later, prompting a chase involving Armed Response units. The pursuit ended when the vehicle crashed at the intersection of Ballards Lane and Woodberry Gardens, N12.
The individuals charged are Oisin McGuinness, 21, and Nathan Dunn, 19, both residents of Watford, along with a 16-year-old boy from north London. All three face charges of arson with intent to endanger life. Additionally, McGuinness is charged with dangerous driving. They are scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 17 April.
Following the attack, neighbours near the broadcaster were evacuated as police confirmed there was no further risk. The investigation is being led by Counter Terrorism Policing London, with support from North West Command officers. However, officials have not classified the incident as terrorism at this stage.
Detectives have indicated that this attack is not connected to other recent arson incidents in the area, including the Finchley fire-bombing or the Golders Green blaze last month. The assault appears to be a targeted attack on Volant Media, the parent company of Iran International.
Iran International has long been a target due to its fearless reporting on Iranian politics and human rights issues. Despite ongoing security threats, the broadcaster continues to operate in London, providing Persian-language content that offers a critical perspective unavailable within Iran.
Police have not disclosed whether the accused have any links to the Iranian state or if they acted independently, leaving the motive behind the attack unclear.
