Derlano Samuels, aged 17, died after a brutal stabbing in a Smethwick street on May 1 last year. The attack took place in Cape Hill, where Derlano was stabbed multiple times, including a knife tip lodged in his skull.
The incident began shortly before 4:10 pm when Cam’Ron Dunn attacked Derlano in the street, stabbing him twice. The terrified teenager fled but was chased into a shop on 1 Road. Dunn followed him inside and trapped Derlano in a storeroom, where he stabbed him repeatedly before fleeing the scene.
Despite his severe injuries, Derlano managed to escape the shop and get into a nearby car. Minutes later, the vehicle crashed on Heath Street 1, where officers found Derlano lying on the ground. Paramedics rushed him to hospital, but he was pronounced dead about an hour later.
A post-mortem examination revealed the fatal stab wound was to his chest, alongside other serious injuries, including the knife tip embedded in his skull.
Police acted quickly, recovering CCTV footage that captured the attack. An officer recognised Cam’Ron Dunn from the footage and raided his home in Sketchley Close, Smethwick at 1:20 am the following day. Dunn, then aged 18, was arrested on suspicion of murder.
During the raid, officers seized a freshly washed blue tracksuit matching the attacker’s clothing, a stab-proof vest found in Dunn’s bedroom, a knife sheath discovered in the downstairs toilet, and two machetes were recovered, although neither was used in the attack.
After a seven-day trial at 1 Crown Court, the jury took just 90 minutes to find Cam’Ron Dunn guilty of murdering Derlano Samuels. The deadly knife used in the attack remains untraced, as the community mourns the loss of a young life cut tragically short.
