A sex offender who openly boasted on WhatsApp about assaulting a woman has been sentenced to prison. Chiziem Omisa, aged 25, sexually attacked a young woman in May 2019 after meeting her online and sending her unwanted messages.
Initially, Omisa denied the assault when questioned by police. However, the victim had urged him to stop, although she did not report the incident at first.
The police investigation intensified when officers seized Omisa’s phone during an unrelated arrest. A forensic examination of the device uncovered critical evidence. Authorities then located the victim, who explained how Omisa, using a fake name, had lured her to his student flat in Nottingham after finding her Instagram profile.
Once there, Omisa pressured her to remain silent, warning that speaking out could lead to her expulsion from university.
Key evidence in the case came from Omisa’s own WhatsApp messages sent on the day of the attack, in which he bragged about the encounter. These messages contradicted his earlier denials and were instrumental in securing his conviction.
Omisa pleaded guilty to one count of sexual assault by penetration. He also admitted to stalking two additional women while on bail, as well as perverting the course of justice.
On June 27, 2024, Omisa, who is from Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, was sentenced at St Albans Crown Court to four years and four months in prison. Along with the custodial sentence, he was given a restraining order preventing any contact with his victims.
Additionally, Omisa is subject to a sexual harm prevention order. This order requires police to have access to all his electronic devices, mandates registration of his social media accounts, and prohibits him from sending unsolicited friend requests to women online.
Police Staff Investigator Kerry Humphreys from Nottinghamshire Police commented: “While his behaviour alone may not always be illegal, Omisa’s refusal to accept rejection and harassment of women shows a toxic attitude that led to his conviction.”
