West Lothian recently saw one of Scotland’s largest illegal tobacco factories being raided and dismantled following a coordinated operation by police and HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). The factory was reportedly designed with advanced technology to evade millions in unpaid tobacco duty annually.
The illegal setup included expensive machinery and soundproofing measures to conceal noise and smells. Authorities confiscated approximately four tonnes of tobacco, which represents a tax loss valued at around £1 million. In addition, suspected counterfeit tobacco pouches were removed from circulation.
Joe Hendry, Assistant Director of the Fraud Investigation Service, stated: “This was one of the largest and most sophisticated tobacco factories we have ever uncovered in Scotland. We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to find and prosecute those behind the illegal tobacco trade. The illicit trade robs money from vital public services, undercuts honest businesses, and fuels more crime. If you know about illegal tobacco or alcohol sales, report it to HMRC online.”
Detective Sergeant John Irvine of Police Scotland added: “We’re determined to disrupt, detect, and deter anyone involved in counterfeit or illegal tobacco sales. Five individuals have been arrested and charged in connection with the illegal tobacco operation. Police have warned that this raid marks only the beginning of a broader crackdown on the illicit tobacco trade across Scotland.
