Christopher George Nast, a drifter with no fixed address, has been handed a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, after admitting multiple thefts in Rushden. However, his crime spree did not stop there.
After pleading guilty to six offences, Nast was caught again and pleaded guilty to three more shoplifting crimes. This led to the activation of his suspended sentence. The combined punishment means he will serve 12 months and two weeks behind bars.
The offences took place between December 20 and 30, 2022, targeting Tesco Express in Rushden and the Co-op in Higham Ferrers. Nast stole a variety of items including meat and chocolate bars, all allegedly to feed his drug habit.
On December 20, he was caught red-handed stuffing a bag with unpaid items at Tesco. On December 28, he stole around £30 worth of meat from the Co-op. On December 30, he returned to Tesco to steal chocolate bars but was stopped by staff once again.
Inspector Miriam Kiernan of the East Northants Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “Christopher Nast is a persistent thief who has caused serious stress to local businesses to fund his drug addiction. We hope his time in prison helps him get the support he needs and gives our businesses a break.”
Inspector Kiernan added that the police will continue working with shops to catch offenders and keep communities safe.
