Ryan Scott, 28, from Blyth, has been jailed for 10 years following a deadly crash on the A19 in North Tyneside. The tragic accident occurred on the evening of Friday, December 5, in Holystone.
Scott was driving a Skoda Fabia northbound at an excessive speed when he collided with Claire Laybourne’s Volkswagen T-Roc. Claire Laybourne, a 39-year-old mother, was rushed to hospital but sadly died the following day.
Investigations revealed that Scott was speeding at 112mph just five seconds before the collision. The vehicle’s anti-lock braking system activated, reducing his speed to 90mph, which was still nearly 20mph over the speed limit.
After the crash, Scott fled the scene on foot in an attempted hit-and-run. Police matched his DNA to the Skoda’s airbag, confirming he was the driver involved in the collision.
Scott pleaded guilty to multiple charges including causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving, driving uninsured, and failing to stop after the crash. He was immediately taken into custody and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
