The fallout from the bungled Operation Midland scandal continues to unfold. Sir Richard Henriques, who reviewed the Metropolitan Police’s catastrophic handling of the 2014-2016 child abuse inquiry, has urged fresh scrutiny. He called for possible charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice against two key figures, known only as Witness A and Witness B.
Crucially, Sir Richard Henriques recommended that an outside police force handle the investigation to ensure impartiality and maintain public confidence.
Earlier this year, fresh evidence prompted West Midlands Police to take action. Tasked by the Metropolitan Police, they reviewed all relevant material linked to Witnesses A and B. Their findings raised enough suspicion to justify opening a formal investigation into whether these witnesses attempted to pervert the course of justice.
With the Metropolitan Police already mired in Operation Midland’s failures, they wisely stepped back, allowing an independent force to lead the investigation.
Operation Midland, which ran from late 2014 to early 2016, was intended to investigate historic child abuse and murder allegations made by Carl Beech against high-profile British figures. However, the inquiry ultimately destroyed the lives and reputations of innocent men.
The 18-month investigation uncovered no evidence to support Beech’s claims. The Metropolitan Police later issued public apologies to those wrongly accused and paid financial compensation for the damage caused.
Carl Beech himself was jailed for 18 years in 2019 for perverting the course of justice.
The scandal severely damaged the Metropolitan Police’s reputation and raised concerns that genuine abuse victims might hesitate to come forward in the future.
This latest investigation into Witnesses A and B opens a new chapter in Operation Midland’s controversial history. Authorities are determined to hold those responsible accountable and restore public trust.
The case highlights the vital need for police to conduct thorough and fair investigations to protect the innocent and ensure true justice is served.
