PC Darren Attwood, a Metropolitan Police officer, found himself in a dangerous situation even on his day off. On 2 November 2024, a quiet Saturday, Darren was out shopping with his wife when he noticed two suspicious men on a moped in a pedestrian zone. The men were wearing flip flops and no helmets, which immediately raised concerns.
True to his instincts, Darren told his wife, “I’m just going to go and have a look.” Approaching the men calmly, he said, “What are you doing, lads? Whatever you’re doing, just stop it. It’s not worth it.”
Instead of backing down, one of the men whispered, “Just kill him, fam,” and the other brandished a machete. Darren recalled, “It was at that point I thought: it’s a bit too late to run away. I’m in too deep now. I need to do something.”
With no backup or radio and wearing only his denim shirt, Darren was attacked. The men slashed his arm and waist. He managed to grab a large plastic barrier to use as a shield, but one of the attackers stabbed him in the chest before they fled the scene.
Despite his injuries, Darren called 999. “They were there in two minutes. It was lovely to hear sirens coming from everywhere,” he said.
The attackers, brothers Hannan and Humar Mahmood, were quickly arrested and sentenced to seven years each at Luton Crown Court.
Darren was publicly commended by the Commissioner and received a High Sheriff’s Award for his courage. The Metropolitan Police produced a five-and-a-half-minute video titled “We’re never off duty” highlighting Darren’s bravery. In 2026, he was honoured with the prestigious London Police Bravery Award. Police Mutual described him as “a true hero.”
What began as a simple Saturday shopping trip ended with PC Darren Attwood sustaining stab wounds, seeing justice served, and earning multiple awards, reminding everyone that for some officers, the job never truly ends.
