Just before 7pm on November 5, 2020, a violent gang attack unfolded on Moston Lane in Oldham when a group of 13 males encountered a rival group including 17-year-old John Soyoye. The attackers suddenly produced machetes, bats, and other weapons, charging at John and his friends in a savage sword-and-bat assault.
John became trapped and was brutally assaulted after falling behind and bleeding during the chase down Birchenall Street. Surrounded by nine assailants, he was repeatedly stabbed, slashed, struck, and kicked in a vicious mob attack. The entire attack was recorded on camera by one of the attackers. Despite efforts from passers-by, John died at the scene from his severe injuries.
Following the attack, the gang dispersed, with some members taking a taxi to Royal Oldham Hospital. Brent Tchipenda, one of the attackers, arrived at A&E claiming to be a victim of an assault in Oldham, notably without his bloodied clothes and rucksack. Police quickly became suspicious and arrested Tchipenda on murder charges.
Subsequent arrests included Francesco Raji, Christopher Semedo, Nelson Correia, Octavio Antonio, a 16-year-old, and Ismael Correia. Investigations of seized phones uncovered disturbing drill music lyrics referencing John’s nickname ‘MD’ and a video boasting about the killing. Octavio Antonio was caught attempting to flee the country by train at St Pancras station.
After an 11-week trial held between October and December 2021, the court delivered significant sentences to the convicted:
- Christopher Semedo – 24 years
- Nelson Correia – 23½ years
- Francesco Raji & Brent Tchipenda – 21 years each
- Octavio Antonio – 20 years
- Ismael Correia – 20½ years
- 16-year-old accomplice – 16 years
Mohammed Al-Jaf was acquitted of murder but found guilty of manslaughter, with sentencing yet to be decided. Five suspects remain at large and are believed to have fled the UK.
Detective Chief Inspector Gareth Davies commented on the case, stating, “This was a horrific and senseless assault that cost a young boy his life. No parent should hear of such brutality. These sentences send a clear warning — carrying knives ruins lives. GMP will continue hunting those responsible to bring justice.”
