A serving Metropolitan Police officer, Matthew Olive, aged 26, has been charged with illegally accessing police databases and passing sensitive information to a journalist. The allegations relate to offences committed between December 29, 2022, and June 22, 2023.
The journalist involved in the case has been identified as Rebecca Tidy.
Olive was scheduled to enter pleas at Southwark Crown Court, but the proceedings were unexpectedly adjourned. Prosecutor Dickon Reid informed the court: “The defendant was a serving Metropolitan Police officer charged with five counts of misconduct in a public office.”
Olive is accused of abusing his position by unlawfully accessing confidential police systems and sharing information with Tidy. This conduct represents a serious breach of trust and legal duty expected of any police officer.
Misconduct in public office is a grave offence that can result in a sentence of up to life imprisonment. The case highlights concerns about vulnerabilities in police data protection and the potential misuse of official resources.
A new court date is anticipated soon. Neither Matthew Olive nor Rebecca Tidy have made any public comments regarding the matter. The Metropolitan Police have not issued a statement but are expected to respond as the case progresses.
