Emergency services are currently tackling a major fire that erupted in a terraced house near Ley Street and Benton Road, Ilford. The blaze caused an explosion and led to the roof collapsing, also damaging neighbouring properties.
The fire rapidly intensified into a fierce blaze, engulfing the property and forcing the roof to cave in. Nearby homes have suffered damage as a result.
Fire crews from across London responded swiftly to the scene, working to contain the flames and prevent the fire from spreading further.
The London Fire Brigade deployed multiple units, involving around 60 firefighters and eight fire engines. The London Ambulance Service sent their Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) to assist on site. Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police established road closures around Ley Street to prioritise public safety and manage traffic flow.
Station Commander Darren McTernan stated: “Firefighters are working hard to bring this fire under control. Ley Street is closed between Eastern Avenue and Vicarage Road, impacting traffic in the area, so please avoid it if you can. We’re using a 32-metre turntable ladder to tackle the fire from above.”
Local residents reported hearing loud explosions and witnessing extensive structural damage. Emergency teams continue to search the site to determine if anyone was injured or trapped.
Authorities have urged residents and drivers to avoid the incident area to allow emergency crews to operate efficiently. Cordon zones remain active as investigations continue.
The cause of the fire remains unknown as officials examine the wreckage. A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed officers arrived shortly after the blaze began at approximately 4:08 pm on December 10. Police remain on site alongside fire and ambulance crews.
