A Manchester mother, Morsal Mohammed Naim, 32, has been sentenced to nine years in prison after admitting to shaking her two-year-old daughter Omra to death and subsequently lying to paramedics about the cause of the injuries.

Naim initially told paramedics that Omra had choked on a biscuit. However, when emergency services arrived, there were no signs of choking. Omra was rushed to Manchester Children’s Hospital with catastrophic brain injuries. Despite extensive medical efforts, Omra died nearly three months later from severe head trauma.

Omra’s father, 32-year-old Firooz Wali Jan, was also sentenced to six years and nine months after admitting to child cruelty involving injuries to Omra’s hand, neck, and arm. Both parents initially denied causing Omra’s death but later admitted to abuse during the investigation.

Alan Richardson from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) condemned the actions, stating, “Morsal Mohammed Naim not only shook her daughter to death, but then lied about what she had done. As her mother, Naim should have cared for two-year-old Omra and kept her safe. Instead, she inflicted the catastrophic injuries that caused Omra’s death. It is a killing almost impossible to comprehend in its cruelty and sheer senselessness.”

Richardson also praised the CPS and Greater Manchester Police for their thorough investigation and for building a strong case that led to the parents’ guilty pleas.

The case details reveal that a family member called 999 on 30 November 2023 after Omra was found not breathing at home. Paramedics experienced delays entering the house and found Omra in cardiac arrest. Hospital scans showed brain bleeding, a healing rib fracture, and eye haemorrhages—injuries inconsistent with choking or accidental falls.

Police interviews uncovered contradictory accounts from Naim before she confessed to shaking Omra in an attempt to dislodge a biscuit. Expert analysis confirmed that Omra’s fatal injuries were caused by violent shaking rather than choking or accidental trauma.

The sentencing took place at Manchester Crown Court on 13 February 2026, bringing some closure to this tragic and horrific case.
