Kent Police have charged a man with the murder of a woman in Rainham. Officers were called to Miers Court Road at 8.32pm on Thursday, 10 October 2019, following reports of a stabbing.

Emergency services, including the South East Coast Ambulance Service, attended the scene where 55-year-old Lesley Spearing was found stabbed and later pronounced dead. A post mortem examination confirmed that she died from a stab wound.

A suspect, 27-year-old Jamie Burnett from Old Road, Chatham, was arrested shortly after the incident on Rainham High Street. The Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate launched a murder investigation in response to the incident.

On Saturday, 12 October, the Crown Prosecution Service formally charged Burnett with murder. He appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court the same day and was remanded in custody. Burnett is scheduled to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on Monday, 14 October.

Police have confirmed that both the victim and the suspect were known to each other.
