A man has appeared in court accused of assaulting his father, who later died from serious injuries.
John Cashman, 73, was found severely injured outside his Georgian house in Rockfield, Cappagh, Co Waterford on Monday evening. Emergency services attended the scene and attempted to save him, but he was pronounced dead at the location.
His son, 45-year-old John Cashman Jnr, who lives at the same address, was charged with assault causing harm. He appeared at Carrick-on-Suir District Court today.
Detective Garda Martin Keohane confirmed that Cashman Jnr was charged at Dungarvan Garda Station on Tuesday night but made no reply to the charges.
The accused’s solicitor, Eamonn Hayes, applied for bail, but gardai opposed the application, citing the serious nature of the case and the possibility of further charges pending post-mortem results.
Cashman Jnr’s defence argued that he acted in self-defence after being confronted by his father. He denied kicking his father’s head while he was on the ground and claimed the fatal injury occurred when his father fell and hit the ground.
The defence also stated that Cashman Jnr moved back to Ireland from the UK in 2021, purchased land in Waterford, and currently has no ties to the UK.
John’s mother, Gillian Cashman, attended the hearing in support of her son and expressed her belief in his integrity and honesty.
Solicitor Mr Hynes described the father as being “at odds with the family.”
Judge O’Leary refused bail. Cashman Jnr was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Clonmel District Court next Tuesday.
The investigation is ongoing as gardai await further forensic results.
