A 40-year-old Lithuanian national, Giedrius Vasiljevas, died from a gunshot wound to his abdomen during a police confrontation in Dagenham, East London. The fatal shooting occurred on November 23 after Metropolitan Police officers responded to a distress call made by Vasiljevas himself.
Vasiljevas dialled 999, warning that he intended to take his own life and claiming to have loaded firearms. Police quickly dispatched a team, including a specialist negotiator, to his home on Weston Green, aiming to resolve the situation peacefully.
The situation turned tragic when Vasiljevas confronted officers at his doorstep, resulting in gunfire. Despite efforts from emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at 9.30pm.
His wife, Sigita Vasiljeva, paid tribute to her husband, describing him as a “hardworking family man and a good father.” She also criticised the lack of adequate psychological support, highlighting his ongoing mental health struggles.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation into the shooting. IOPC Regional Director Charmaine Arbouin expressed sympathy for Vasiljevas’ family and emphasised the importance of an independent inquiry to establish the full facts. An inquest will open shortly at East London Coroner’s Court.
The incident has raised concerns among local residents regarding police conduct and the tragic outcome. The IOPC has assured a thorough investigation and committed to keeping the family informed of progress.
