On the morning of Wednesday 31 March 2021, Kent and Essex’s Serious Crime Directorate executed six warrants targeting a nationwide brothel management ring. Police raided multiple locations, seizing nearly £4,800 in cash, two laptops, seven mobile phones, and key documents related to the control of prostitution.
During the operation, three individuals were arrested across Kent and North London. In Gillingham, Balmoral Road, a 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of keeping a brothel, money laundering, and fraud. In North London, a 48-year-old woman with no fixed address and a 60-year-old man from Wood Green were also arrested on suspicion of brothel keeping. All three have since been released pending further inquiries.
Two days after the raids, 35-year-old Yuan Hang of James Gardens, Wood Green, voluntarily attended Kent Police headquarters. He was charged with conspiring to control prostitution for gain and acquiring criminal property. Yuan was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on 4 May, following an initial court hearing on 3 April.
Kent Police is intensifying efforts to raise awareness of modern slavery and human trafficking through a campaign in partnership with Crimestoppers UK. The campaign utilises social media and engages local organisations such as Neighbourhood Watch, town councils, and chambers of commerce to spread awareness.
Leaflets in multiple languages have been distributed in communities most affected by exploitation, encouraging the public to recognise warning signs and report any suspicious activities to authorities.
