Just before midnight on June 25, 2025, chaos erupted in Caerau, Cardiff. Police rushed to Heol y Gaer after reports of a man found unconscious with serious head injuries. What seemed like a hit-and-run quickly revealed a darker, brutal attack.

The victim was battered with a fractured skull, damaged spleen, broken hand, and numerous cuts and bruises. Two local brothers, Carl Newman, 39, and Christopher Newman, 44, were swiftly arrested. Both now face charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

On March 6, the Newman siblings pleaded guilty at Cardiff Crown Court. They were sentenced to six years and four months behind bars, bringing some relief to the shaken community.
Detective Sergeant Rachel Walsh from South Wales Police said: “The outcome at court is the result of determined detective work which we hope reassures the victim and builds trust and confidence in the police within the wider community.”
