A 40-year-old man from Hampshire was arrested on Thursday, April 22, as part of a significant terrorism investigation. Christopher Carey, who resides on Caperns Road in North Anston, was detained by South Yorkshire’s Counter Terrorism Policing North East during a pre-planned, intelligence-led operation.
Carey is now facing three charges under Section 2 of the Terrorism Act 2006 for spreading terrorist material. In addition, he has been charged with possession of Class A drugs under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.
The accused appeared via video link at Westminster Magistrates Court on Saturday, April 24, where he was remanded in custody pending further proceedings.
Portsmouth District Commander, Superintendent Clare Jenkins, addressed public concerns, stating, “We know that many people might be worried about this news, however, we are working together closely with our colleagues in Counter Terrorism Policing to keep our communities safe.” She added, “If you think you have seen something suspicious that may be linked to terrorist activity have the confidence to share those concerns. It may be unusual behaviour in a particular place or at a particular time of day, or online – don’t rely on others. Thank you for your continued support.”
