In the early hours of January 1, 2020, a brutal knife and machete attack took place at a caravan site on Gypsy Lane, Irchester, Northamptonshire. Four men launched a terrifying assault on two caravans after one victim intervened to stop a stranger being attacked during a group outing.
The attackers used knives, machetes, and billhooks in the violent attack. The victims suffered serious injuries in what police described as a “scene of such bloodshed it’s incredible no one was killed.” This incident followed an earlier confrontation in Wellingborough.
Following an extensive investigation by Northamptonshire Police, the four men were brought to trial in March. They were convicted of charges including attempted murder, grievous bodily harm with intent, and possession of offensive weapons.
The sentences handed down by the judge were as follows:
- Patrick McDonagh, 37, of Rushden, convicted of attempted murder and other charges, sentenced to 22 years.
- John McDonagh, 38, of Leicestershire, sentenced to 13 years and six months.
- Bernard McDonagh, 20, of Leicestershire, sentenced to 8 years.
- Charlie McDonagh, 21, of Birmingham, sentenced to 9 years.
Detective Sergeant Ryan Catling commented, “This violent and terrifying incident has changed the victims’ lives forever. These reckless men have been rightly deprived of their liberty following meticulous police work. There is no place for violence in Northamptonshire.”
Detective Superintendent Paul Rymarz added, “The investigation team’s exceptional work sends a clear message – violent criminals in Northamptonshire will be caught and brought to justice.”
The police also praised the victims for their immense courage in facing serious physical and mental trauma, as well as threats for standing up and giving evidence. Officers involved in the case were commended for their dedication throughout the investigation.
