A police pursuit through central London streets ended in tragedy early Monday morning when a motorcyclist died after colliding with a taxi and street furniture near Warren Street tube station.
At around 6.45am on 25 September, two officers on marked police motorcycles observed a motorcycle run a red light. The motorcycle, carrying two men, fled as police gave chase along Tottenham Court Road.
The pursuit concluded in disaster when the motorbike crashed into a taxi and street fixtures. The rider was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities discovered that the pillion passenger was carrying a machete. He was arrested immediately and taken to hospital with serious leg and arm injuries sustained in the crash.
The Metropolitan Police’s Directorate of Professional Standards has launched an investigation into the incident. They are collaborating with the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command to determine the full circumstances of the chase and crash.
Additionally, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has been notified and initiated its own inquiry to ensure transparency and accountability in the case.
