PC Eliot McDermott, previously serving with the North Area Basic Command Unit, appeared at Luton Crown Court on Friday, 23 September. He pleaded guilty to criminal damage after an investigation conducted by Hertfordshire Constabulary. The court issued a conditional discharge and ordered McDermott to pay costs, compensation, and a victim surcharge.
A misconduct panel, chaired by an independent legally qualified individual, reviewed the evidence related to McDermott’s conduct. The panel found that he breached the Standards of Professional Behaviour, specifically in the areas of Discreditable Conduct and Honesty and Integrity. Following the hearing, which concluded on 23 November, the panel ruled the case as gross misconduct and stated that McDermott would have been dismissed without notice.
Before formal dismissal proceedings could be completed, PC McDermott resigned from the Metropolitan Police on Monday, 14 November. Subsequently, he has been placed on the Barred List maintained by the College of Policing. Inclusion on this list prohibits him from working for any police force, local policing bodies including Police and Crime Commissioners, as well as the Independent Office for Police Conduct and Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services.
