A former Greater Manchester Police (GMP) Sergeant and a serving Custody Detention Officer (CDO) have been given community orders following an assault on a prisoner while in custody.
Ex-Sergeant Ian Dunn was found guilty of assault at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on July 10, 2023. Custody Detention Officer Warren Clarke had already pleaded guilty to the same offence prior to the trial.
Sentencing took place on July 11, with Dunn receiving a 12-week curfew and Clarke an eight-week curfew. Both men were also ordered to pay court costs and a victim surcharge.
The assault occurred at Pendleton Police Station in June 2022 when Clarke threw a bucket of water over a male prisoner. Following the incident, Dunn retired from the police force, while Clarke remains suspended. Both officers are subject to internal disciplinary proceedings.
Chief Inspector Carl Gilbert of GMP’s Professional Standards Branch stated, “Even though the victim did not complain, this behaviour will not be tolerated. A full investigation led to these convictions. Disciplinary proceedings will follow.”
Assistant Chief Constable Colin McFarlane, GMP’s Custody Lead, added, “Everyone who comes into contact with GMP deserves respect and compassion. We’ve appointed a new custody command team and are rolling out reforms to uphold the highest standards.”
