Two Charged After Protest Breach at Epping Forest Council
Two protesters have been charged following a demonstration outside Epping Forest District Council’s civic offices. Around 200 demonstrators gathered on Sunday evening, defying strict police restrictions.
Heavy Police Restrictions Ahead of Protest
Essex Police had laid down tough rules to keep the peace during the protest about housing 138 asylum seekers at the Bell Hotel. These included:
- A Section 14 order confining protest to a fenced area opposite the hotel and requiring all activity to end by 8pm.
- A Section 12 order controlling the route between Theydon Road and Lindsey Street.
- A Section 60AA order allowing officers to remove face coverings hiding identities.
Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Hooper said the measures were “to prevent serious disruption and disorder”.
Arrests Made as Protest Turns Sour
- Sarah White, 40, from Chigwell, faces charges for failing to comply with procession conditions and as an organiser. She is bailed to appear at 1 Magistrates’ Court on 15 October.
- Scott Davey, 32, from Nazeing, charged with breaching public assembly rules. He will appear at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on 31 October.
- A 22-year-old man from Epping was arrested on suspicion of inciting racial hatred and racially aggravated criminal damage linked to a banner set on fire days earlier. He is bailed until 28 November.
Police Deny Flag Unfurling Arrest Rumours
“There has been suggestion on social media that we made an arrest on Sunday because someone unfurled a flag. I want to be really clear – that is categorically wrong. Unfurling or putting up a flag is not a criminal offence, and nobody has been arrested for doing that.” – ACC Stuart Hooper
He added police have “consistently facilitated lawful protest throughout the summer” but will act firmly to prevent disorder and protect the community.
