Engineer Daniel Appleton Jailed for Double Murder
Daniel Appleton, 38, an engineer from Crawley Down, has been handed life behind bars for the brutal killings of his wife Amy Appleton and a passer-by, Sandy Seagrave. The shocking double murder took place outside their home on Hazel Way on December 22, 2019.
Jury Sends Appleton to Prison for Minimum 26½ Years
After a six-week trial, the jury found Appleton guilty of two counts of murder on December 29, 2020. On Monday, January 25, Lewes Crown Court sentenced him to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 26 and a half years before parole.
Deadly Attack Triggered by Psychotic Episode and Drugs
The court heard Appleton attacked Amy, 32, on their driveway before fatally stabbing 76-year-old Sandy as she intervened. Three psychiatric assessments revealed Appleton experienced a brief psychotic episode with hypomanic symptoms during the killings.
Trace amounts of a psychoactive substance similar to LSD were found in his hair and nails. Although Appleton admitted responsibility, he denied taking the drug. The jury concluded drug use triggered his psychosis, leading to the tragic murders.
Police Pay Tribute to Victims and Thank Supporters
“This was an incredibly difficult and emotive case,” said Detective Chief Inspector Chris Friday of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team. “Our thoughts remain with the families of Amy Appleton and Sandy Seagrave. While nothing can bring them back, we hope this lengthy sentence brings some comfort knowing justice has been served.”
